How Much Should I Weigh?

Your healthy weight depends on height, body composition, age, sex, and health. Use BMI and ideal body weight estimates as useful reference points.

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI compares your weight with your height. For adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 falls within the commonly used healthy range. BMI does not measure body fat or muscle directly.

How Is Ideal Body Weight Calculated?

Hamwi Formula

For men, use 106+6×eachinchover5ft106 + 6 × each inch over 5 ft. For women, use 100+5×eachinchover5ft100 + 5 × each inch over 5 ft. Results use pounds.

Devine Formula

For men, use 50+2.3×eachinchover5ft50 + 2.3 × each inch over 5 ft. For women, use 45.5+2.3×eachinchover5ft45.5 + 2.3 × each inch over 5 ft. Results use kilograms.

Robinson Formula

For men, use 52+1.9×eachinchover5ft52 + 1.9 × each inch over 5 ft. For women, use 49+1.7×eachinchover5ft49 + 1.7 × each inch over 5 ft. Results use kilograms.

Miller Formula

For men, use 56.2+1.41×eachinchover5ft56.2 + 1.41 × each inch over 5 ft. For women, use 53.1+1.36×eachinchover5ft53.1 + 1.36 × each inch over 5 ft. Results use kilograms.

How Can I Calculate My Ideal Weight Manually?

Formula

Choose one IBW formula. For Hamwi, a 5 foot 10 inch man uses 106+(6×10)=166lb106 + (6 × 10) = 166 lb. Another formula can produce a different result.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Measure your height.
  2. Convert it to feet and inches.
  3. Choose an IBW formula.
  4. Apply the height adjustment.
  5. Check the result.
  6. Compare it with BMI and health context.

Practical Example

A man who is 5 feet 10 inches has 10 inches above 5 feet. Hamwi gives 106+(6×10)=166lb106 + (6 × 10) = 166 lb. That equals about 75.3 kg.

Factors That Affect a Healthy Weight

Height, age, sex, muscle mass, body composition, genetics, and health conditions can all affect a healthy weight.

Height

Height strongly affects body weight because taller people usually have more body mass. Weight ranges rise as height increases.

Age

Age can change muscle, fat, and bone patterns. Adults should not use age alone to set a healthy weight or BMI target.

Sex

Sex can affect IBW formulas because some formulas use different base weights for men and women. Your result remains an estimate.

Body Frame Size

Body frame size can affect weight needs. A small or large frame may make one number less useful as a personal target.

Muscle Mass

Muscle weighs more than the same volume of fat. A muscular person may weigh more while still having low body fat.

Body Composition

Body composition shows how much of your weight comes from fat, muscle, bone, and other tissue. It adds context beyond BMI.

Genetics

Genetics can influence body shape, fat storage, appetite, and weight patterns. Family traits can affect your healthy weight range.

Health Conditions

Health conditions can change weight, body composition, and treatment needs. Ask a healthcare professional when illness affects your weight.

Ideal Weight vs BMI

BMI uses height and weight to classify weight ranges. Ideal body weight uses formulas to estimate a reference weight.

Limitations of our IBW calculator

Our IBW calculator gives estimates, not medical targets. It cannot fully account for muscle, body fat, age, pregnancy, or health conditions. Different formulas can also produce different results.
